starter pulley spins but not the engine
I just bought a 1982 E-Z-Go gas cart #G0582, and it ran like a Swiss watch until I took it up a fairly steep hill with 2 adults. I think I sheered a woodruff key that connects the starter pulley to the crankshaft. The pulley spins freely on the crank now. Is there a site that I can download a service manual for this cart? Is replacing the key, if that is the cause, a difficult task? Does the engine need to be removed? Are the keys available? Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: starter pulley spins but not the engine
sounds like you are talking about the larger pully, the one on the engine. if that's the case that is your primary clutch and i don't believe there is a key on it. it slides onto the tapered part of crank and is held in place with a bolt. at the top of this forum go to "gas tech", and find the thread with the gold stars. there you will find the link to bennetts carts. might not find you specific year, but they were pretty much the same up till 87.

Re: starter pulley spins but not the engine
So, if you are correct, that means that the pulley is held onto the tapered crank with a bolt in the end of the crank and the pulley is a press fit onto the crank, rather than being held from rotating on the crank with a woodruff key? Then all I should have to do is tighten the bolt, correct? Thank you very much. I will get back to you.

Re: starter pulley spins but not the engine
Yes all of that is correct. It is possible that the long bolt has unwound and might now be missing but if you look at the center of the clutch you will either see a bolt head to tighten or the hole in the center.

Thank you. I will look tomorrow. If the bolt is missing, do you have any idea if it is a common metric bolt or something unique to E-Z-Go?

Re: starter pulley spins but not the engine
I would get the correct bolt if its missing, wrong length or strength and you will just end up with more problems down the road. If it has been turning like that I would pull it off and make sure the crank hasn't been damaged.

Re: starter pulley spins but not the engine
Thanks to the 3 gentlemen that responded to my plight. It was the bolt, that was still there, and all I had to do was tighten it. The cart starts and runs like a new one. If I was interested in selling it, any idea what it is worth?

I didnt read everyones post but you should make sure the carb float isnt stuck! It happened to mine once... Sprayed carb cleaner there and tapped on the carb a little and it finally started

Re: starter pulley spins but not the engine
Thanks for the head-up, but it was the bolt that holds the starter/clutch to the crank. It had come loose and was not allowing the engine to rotate when the starter was engaged. I tightened the bolt and all is well.
