J-17 g-1 the slow one
I bought a J-17 1982 g-1
the cart motor is worn and needs rings at a minimum but is the extra slow one year only motor !!!! so what is different about this motor from the normal g-1 motor low c/r is one thing that pops out in my googling can I pop in a normal g-1 piston or are there other changes too does a total rebuild kit fit this odd 1 year cart and restore the c/r to the other years 8.2 level ? or is a clone swap the better idea if I do a swap can the starter/gen be moved to the rear and drive the cart in reverse by hooking up a v-belt to the rear clutch like the stock cart uses on the motor clutch as the cart will be 100% street used no offroad mud or grass ever so reverse will only be used a few feet at a time like to back out of a parking space not to unstick the cart has anyone used a rear clutch drive starter/gen for reverse ??? |

Re: J-17 g-1 the slow one
Cylinder, head, piston, carb all different for that one year. You can find a used engine/top end from a different carb and it will bolt right in. If you are looking for more power, you can use an Enticer 250 top end and carb and you'll be close to 15 hp with the G1 muffler, and if you use the Enticer pipe you will be closer to 20 hp.
A clone is a great idea, as long as you can deal with no reverse. Yes you can mount an electric motor for reverse, it has been done, just not common. You'll have to figure a way to make the engine not spin in reverse. If you have an additional pulley on the secondary clutch, it may still spin the engine backwards. You're best bet is to find a transaxle from a G2/G9 and use that with the clone. It will bolt in with little modification. The biggest hurdle with a clone install is the engine mount. If you have fabrication skills then you don't have an issue. |

Re: J-17 g-1 the slow one
is my stock and old rod/crank/bearing/case strong enuff to last with the snowmobile 15hp top end ?
how many RPM is the old motor good/safe for on avg ? can i buy new snowmobile parts [yamaha?] or only china clone stuff ? or am I left to hunt used bits now will a new or used 250 motor swap in as a unit from S-M to cart ? as miami fl has damm few snow toys so used is not going to be eazy here and buying used bits unseen is a gamble on line how far can the stock 250 S-M cyl be over bored do over sized rings require a oversized piston too or can a 1st oversized ring work on a stock sized piston ? any cuting machining drilling need to fit the 250 S-M motor top to the stock 82/j-17 case ? the S-M motor will run in reverse ok ? |

Re: J-17 g-1 the slow one
Ok, ill bite. The Yamaha G1 engine was based one the Yamaha enticer 250. With that said the head will match up with no fabrication needed but you will need a bigger carb but you wont have to use reeds. As far a finding and buying one I think ebay is your only hope. I did this swap and I bought a head there that had lost compression ($30). Took it to my machine budy and determined it need to go up two sizes (0.50mm) so bought new piston and he worked his magic. They can go up to 1.0mm I believe. I suggest buying Yamaha genuine parts as they will last. Use corresponding piston rings to the corresponding piston! Lastly the reverse will work, that's the beauty of a two-stroke, they run both ways. In shorts its a great upgrade that is very easy to do if you spend the time to find the parts. slonomo has a great write up about it and others have do it as well, so do some reading and have fun.

Re: J-17 g-1 the slow one
I have all the parts you need. The Enticer 250 jug and head are genuine Yamaha parts, freshly bored, new piston and rings. I ran them for less than 100hrs then did the clone swap. I have the carb too. You'd need an air filter setup, carb jets to get it dialed in (any Yamaha dealer), Enticer 250 gasket set (ebay), and an afternoon to swap the parts. It ran great. Got 36-37 mph out of it. It had good midrange and top end power. Here's the thread.

Re: J-17 g-1 the slow one
FOUND THIS ON E-BAY OF ALL PLACES
no idea if correct but sounds like my luck '''Fits years 78-81 and 83-89 models. The 82 model and has casing # J1700 on side & Have a narrow intake w/4 pedal reed cage , Rest had 6 pedal reed cage like this one, wide intake. This Reed Intake measures 3 3/8 "s across at top.'''' want to sell the whole motor as a unit ? sounds like the parts will not swap vs wide or narrow intake/reeds ? |
