88 EZGO electric resistor cart resistor problem
I just got an 88 EZGO resistor cart and fiber board was burnt when I got it
And I replaced it and have been running it for a week and noticed the first Terminal is burnt again. Coils look good and are not touching. What could be causing this? |

Re: 88 EZGO electric resistor cart resistor problem
Without going into a long story - the resistor coil and speed wiper system is 1950s technology which worked okay for the game of golf (50-20 yrs ago) but can not handle any additional loads like continuous use or big tires or added load or off road use. They are still okay as long as your use is close to a game of golf on relatively flat ground. Go here > http://www.cartsunlimited.net/Scotty...rsion_Kit.html to read more about how they work and why modern carts changed to solid state speed control.

Re: 88 EZGO electric resistor cart resistor problem
Is there any way to keep it from getting this hot
Until I can afford to replace it with a new controller? Just spent $600 on new batteries. Will running a biger wire from wiper to resistor help with the heat? It is a stock cart. |

Re: 88 EZGO electric resistor cart resistor problem
I ran an 84 resistor cart for 16 years and have experienced about every problem you can have with one. Are you saying the first contact that the wiper engages is burned? That was a common problem with mine. I didn't know until last year that there was supposed to be a cable running from that first terminal up to the same side of the solenoid as the wiper. That cable really cut down on arcing after I added it. It worked without it, but it arced and burned that first terminal often. So first question - does your cart have that cable? Many wiring diagrams do not show it, and I only found it from a wiring diagram posted on here.
If you have that cable, then the next suggestion is regarding the way you drive it - run it wide open all the time! If you have to go slower, push the pedal to the metal and then let up. Keep doing that and you can go at the speed you need, but most of the time you want it running wide open. I had no trouble keeping it running cool when I ran it myself, and I had 22" tires on the back. It was only when I loaned it to others and they refused to follow my directions that it got hot. My wife did good running it the first 2 years, but I stopped constantly reminding her to not drive it slow and she set the woods on fire and burnt up the motor. You gotta run it wide open! Those terminals can be easily replaced without replacing the whole board. You will soon have a collection of old parts and learn to substitute parts if you keep running it. I'm gonna put all my stuff together and try to sell it. Good luck! |

Re: 88 EZGO electric resistor cart resistor problem
I have an 87 3 wheeler with the wiper and the coils, and that darn thing is BULLETPROOF. I use it for towing and hauling heavy stuff ALL the time, I really abuse it worse than any other cart I have. Vindictive little thing has tried to kill people twice (gas pedal stuck once on me, Dad rolled it over on himself) Darn thing just won't break, and the contacts are all in great shape and original (I think I have that wire). Is it as nice as a cart with solid state drive? No. Does it serve the purpose and function well? Yes.

Re: 88 EZGO electric resistor cart resistor problem
Is the wiper able to be tightened up, like on a TXT FNR?

Re: 88 EZGO electric resistor cart resistor problem
It is heating up on the first terminal on the resistor coil.
Going to try and run a heavier cable from lower wiper terminal to first terminal on resistor to see if that will help. I will update and if anyone has any suggestions let me know. Thanks |

Re: 88 EZGO electric resistor cart resistor problem
You say the first terminal on the wiper board?? nothing goes on the first/bottom terminal it is empty/on cable, the cables start on the second terminal, there is 5 post on the wiper board and one has no cable, that is the at rest area

Re: 88 EZGO electric resistor cart resistor problem
I ment the second terminal. Heavier cable seems to
be working so far. |

Re: 88 EZGO electric resistor cart resistor problem
If a heavier cable fixed it, you may be fine. I'd also look for loose connections, and/or loose contact between the wiper and the terminal. Dunno how a resistor wiper works, but a similar connection exists in a TXT series FNR, and if it's loose, excess resistance/heat can result..
