melted battery post

I have a "Royal Ride" 36v used golf cart. Even though it is a modified with a
rolls royce body, it appears to sit on a club car chassis. It is the traditional solenoid type. What other conditions could cause a battery post to melt other than a bad or loose connection. I am very aware of keeping my connections clean & tight , because this has happened before. The cable also was very hot for at least 5 minutes after it melted you still could not touch the wire connector.The batteries are Trojan 105. Any suggestions appreciated.

You are correct either a bad or loose connection is normal cause of pots melting. Several other things can also cause this problem.
#1-internal corrosion inside cable causing high resistance
#2-too small a cable and or end lug
After doing repairs run cart and then check all cables and connections for heat ( small amount is normal )

Any restriction will cause heat... I have Tested hot connections with a laser type thermometer and found near 200 degree solenoid terminal and traced them back to an even hotter F&R switch. Some thing to remember is the lead posts will melt at a lower temp than the copper and brass connections... So while it is the lead that melts the source could be elsewhere? I hope this helps....
