Default curtis controller

Hi, I'm new here. Hope someone can help. I have a 2007 ezgo sport 2+2. Its 36 volt. I would like to change controller to 400 amp. My current controller has 4 large terminals and 4 small low voltage ones. Low voltage is marked 123 but there is a fourth one on other side with orange wire. Does anyone know what this fourth wire is for. Seems like all the controllers I see do not have this fourth wire. Also does anyone know correct p/n for 400amp upgrade. Cart is series

Thx

For upgrades, I'd go here and read up:

http://www.cartsunlimited.net/Custom_Options.html

Decide whether a 42 or 48 volt upgrade is in your future.

For a series cart, you'll need to upgrade your cables, FNR, and solenoid, to handle higher amperage.

Sounds like you already have a 400A controller.

The standard controller (Curtis 1206 -- 275A) has all four wires in a single MOLEX plug on top of controller. The Heavy-Duty controller option (Curtis 1205-117 -- 400A) has four wires the plug in individually.

The Orange wire is for half-speed reverse.

To upgrade the controller in that cart, an Alltrax SPM48400 (or larger) would be a good choice.

The SPM48500 allows a peak draw of 460 amps. Perfect for the Ezgo series cart on stock tires and reasonable terrain with 2 or 4 passengers. Make sure you upgrade the Solenoid to match (200a) and the F&R and cable set (4g) as well.

The new control will have 3 big terminals instead of 4. The 4th big terminal A2 is not used. The 2 cables going to A@ on your control simply join together and bypass the control.
The SPM control will work with your 4 spade connectors 1234 or the later single molex connector. See pkg #484 at our website below. It is the best choice.

thanks for all the inputs. do not know exactly what controller i have. cannot see bottom where id tag is. will have to remove it and see. cart has 22 inch tires on 10 inch rims. runs fine on flat runs but crawls up hill. might put stock golf cart wheels and tire on it while im here in north ga where it is hilly and then put larger tires back on when i snowbird to south fl. hope smaller tires and wheels helps it going up hills. just trying to make the best of a bad situation

One of those two is wrong.

You listed #484 kit later, so you probably meant SMP48400.

You are loosing about 20% of the available torque with 22" tires.

You'll regain it with the 18" tires, but cart will be slower.

If anything other than motor is getting hot, you are loosing electrical energy to heat that ought to be being converted to torque. (Solenoid and controller can get mighty warm, but shouldn't get hot.)

The stock 400a "upgrade" controller is weak IMO, and if it ever gets hot, it gets damaged and forever acts like a smaller controller. Big tires are a good way to cause this. A spm48400 will likely do some magic for your hillclimbing.
