Default Afraid I may have gotten 48v Charger with 36v Cart, Need Help

I bought a refurbished 98 EZGO txt 36v from a guy who buys and resells carts for a living. It came with a quiq brand charger and older trojan batteries.

After trying to charge it the first time the batteries got pretty warm and the charger shut down on a too long to charge error.

I tested the pack and found under load the pack would drop to 28v and 2 cells would not go above 4v resting.

I replaced all 6 cells with new Crowns this weekend and charged it last night, This morning the charger was in stage 4 bulk charge still after 12 hours, batteries pretty warm and here is the concern, voltage while charging was 47v.

With charger removed pack settled to 40.x v in a few mins.

Is this normal or is there a chance the guy sent me a 48v charger? There are no markings on the charger to indicate what it is built for.

After 20 mins pack was at 39.6 and i plugged in the charger again, it slowly climbed to 43v before i unplugged it.

SO.... Did i blow up my new batteries or is this normal charging voltage?

Thanks
Adam

Ezgo Powerwise chargers 36v charges pack to 44-46 volts before they kick off. After 12 hours pack voltage should be 36.3 roughly.

Full charge on a 36 volt pack should read 38.2 volts after resting overnight; could read more if checked soon after the charger kicks off....

A charger does indeed put out more voltage while "charging" the batteries; my DPI 48 volt charger puts out somewhere close to sixty while actively charging and HOLDS my 48 volt pack at 53.1 volts....

The charge MUST have some identifying model # or ? Please post a pic of the charger id tag.

1. The initial charge on new batteries can take over 12 hours.

2. Batteries will warm up while charging. Discontinue charging if they get over 120°F

3. It depends on the charger, but shouldn't exceed 50.2V for a 36V pack.

4. Normal. It takes about 12 hours for the On-Charge voltage to settle to the At-Rest voltage, but the greatest voltage drop occurs in the first few minutes.

5. It is acting normally for a 36V Delta-Q QuiQ charger.

6. There should be a label or silk-screening with a model number. Something like 912-36xx.

7. Normal.

8. No, but the charge algorithm is probably set for Trojan batteries, so you should change it to Crown batteries.

Charging Crowns with a Trojan charge profile won't hurt them, just might not fully charge them, so if you do have the Delta-q QuiQ charge 912-36xx I think you have, go ahead and use it to initially charge your batteries as is while you figure out how to program it for Crown batteries. (Call Delta-Q)

Thanks Johnnie, I was concerned about the length of charge and the voltage... I guess i need to let the charger do its thing a little longer. I will check the charge profile tonight and see if i can set it to crown if available.

Thanks
again.

Your charger should say somewhere what Nominal battery voltage it is designed to charge. It's going to be either 36V or 48V.

The sticker has peeled off... When i saw 47v i was worried. According to the manual it can go as high as 50v output even though it is a 36v charger.

Thanks
