New Links 48v 13 amp charger won't shut off
My old charger quit on me ( 1997 powerdrive lester electrical model 17930) so I bought a new Links Series by Lester electrical 48v 13amp charger but neither of them shut off when in use. I have a 97 48v club car on charge all night and when I checked in the morn the meter needle was at 5 amps and should have shut off long ago. Batteries ( 6 8v) were new 3/12 and I have filled them recently to be sure there was the right amount of liquid. WASSUP, I was told that it was an indication that the batteries won't take a full charge and are on their way out ( By the guy who sells batteries, ha ha go figure!!!)

Does your cart have an OBC?

Re: New Links 48v 13 amp charger won't shut off
It's got something in that spot but it has multiple wires coming from it, doesn't really look like the OBC from the diagram of a 1997 club car ( sec 12, pg23. Also, I did the epsom salt thing last night to see if that helped but alas the charger seems to stop at 5 amps going in and I could hear some "gurgling coming from the batteries !!!!
Here's the link to the diagram >>> http://bennettgolfcars.ca/upfile/man...1114075557.pdf |

See if you can find a part# on the OBC. If it was my cart that's where I'd start.

Re: New Links 48v 13 amp charger won't shut off
I'm far from being a sparky expert, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night!
But, seriously... I had a 98 48V DS that had your same symptoms, Here's a few things that might help... Your OBC is the box that your main negative battery runs through going to the controller, IF... your cart is charging, but stops at 5 amps, in most cases it's not the OBC, but one, or more of your 4 year old batteries that are failing! Keep the charger disconnected from the cart for 12 to 24 hours, and measure the voltage on each of the batteries individually, then take it for a small ride, and remeasure each battery again, in most cases, you'll find that there will be at least one battery that is below 8 volts... if that's the case?... you might want to start saving up for new set! .02 |

I'll try this, I was also told the same ( weak batteries) by the shop. My charger does shut off after 90 mins but that is a function of the charger when it reads that it no longer is charging ( voltage remains the same for 90 mins) BUT I do hear the gurgling and think it's the Epsom salts doing their thing!!??

Re: New Links 48v 13 amp charger won't shut off
As long as there is current flow the charger hasn't shut off. The gurgling sound is electrolysis inside the battery. This happens because the battery has accepted all the charge it can and it is converting the excess current to hydrogen and oxygen. BTW you never did say how your cart runs when you try to drive it.

Re: New Links 48v 13 amp charger won't shut off
seems to run fine( a little shudder when taking off but not until I've driven it for 15 mins or so) I clocked it at 15-17 mph on full charge and I just charged it and went to my buddy's ( 100yds away) and we checked voltage) 5 of 6 were reading 8.5 to 8.7 and 1 was 8.1. The cart seems to lose speed after 1/2hr or more of use on level ground and seems slower when my wife goes with me ( Normal?!)
