I found that when I tried to follow the US Battery recommendation, I had excessive acid pooling on the tops of some of my batteries after changing. My US batteries are 6 volt and equipped with Speed Caps (see attached image).

I now keep the electrolyte level about 1/4" ABOVE the plates (or best that I can estimate). There is now considerably less acid pooling after charging, but I find that I have to keep a closer eye on the electrolyte levels now with less fluid above the plates
1/4 of an inch below the high mark and scrap the "slow me down caps" that will get rid of the water coming out of the cells

Which brings me to another question. My Crown batteries never get wet on top from charging, but it is a pain to remove the original caps.

Are there other cap options for existing batteries like the multiple well caps on old auto batteries?

Thanks Golferdave! That's what I am going to start doing.

I think most batteries have those caps now. They are a pain when setting up cables, though, because you have to account for them moving.

Powertrons don't have them.

Thanks, ThreeCW. Are Speed Caps available for Crown or Trojan batteries aftermarket? I never looked into it.

I do find when I keep the level lower, I have to refill often. When I got this cart a year ago, I had kept them filled to just below the wells. I don't remember having a boil over problem then.

After joining the forum, something made me decide to keep the level lower.
I'm going to raise the level back up to the wells and see what happens.

http://hydrocapcorp.com/products/hydrocap-vent/

I just found these. They look interesting but need more information and pricing.

Anyone ever try them?

$18 ea I think. $432 for a 6x8v pack. And, they have a service life: ~5 years

Don'k know anyone who has them. Never seen them on any batteries.

Overfilling also dilutes the electrolyte concentration . (perfomance)

.
1/4 below fill well you can use a rubber strip marked/taped off at 1/4 and insert to to bottom of fill well / helps trying to judge it by eye

Thanks for the advice . I suspected that the "Speed Caps" were doing a poor job of "capping"! Have other members had problems with these US Battery "Speed Caps" leaking?

I look forward to the day that "I quit doing Acid" and replace my batteries with a Lithium pack!
