Default Replace Steering Rack and Pinion

I have lot of play within the steering box on my 1998 TXT. From searching the forum I have the impression that I may be able to change only the rack (not the pinion or other seals or parts. Is this true? ??

I have already pulled the pinion out by releasing the steering column. There is no obvious damage to the pinion or the rotating universal joint connection. The pinion is covered with dark grey grease. Is this lithium grease which is now discolored after years of use?

Once I open the mechanisms to replace the rack, can I use the same clamps to close it all back up. Are there other interior parts, seals, washers that must be replaced at the same time. there appears to be a bellows on one end of the rack with a zerk fitting. Does the rack and pinion steering box unit get pumped full of lithium grease or is it another type of grease?

Does anyone have a link to a step by step procedure for doing this. I have looked high and low and have not had much success.
I have seen a steering rebuild "kit" for sale which contains only a rack and what appears to be a ball joint (?) which seems somewhat indicate that no replacement seals or clamps are needed while suggesting that a ball joint should be replaced at the same time.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Der Bobby

well I don't know for SURE, I'm not sure of the specific type/kind of grease that is put into the mechanism from the factory.....however, there is lithuim based grease which has molybdenum disulfide in it.....which is DARK GRAY or nearly BLACK, so the grease in your steering box could be perfectly normal. HOWEVER, the manual only specifies WHEEL BEARING GREASE, not the specific type.

Thanks to each of you for taking the time to answer.

I will familiarize myself with the manual before proceeding any further. I have a lot to learn.
