Re: DIY Battery build
One thing that you should have learned from this post is to get cells with either 6mm or 8mm bolts or studs. Another thing is you probably won't be able to use your existing BMS. The LiFePo4 batteries use 16 cells whereas the Li-Ion used 14.

Re: DIY Battery build
Some smart bms can be programmed for either type of cells some even have presets for either.

Re: DIY Battery build
What are the specs on that battery? Price is decent if they are new and good quality.

Re: DIY Battery build
I'm enjoying reading and following this thread! Some day I might build one of these when I gain enough knowledge. For now I have a LOT of questions for another time when I get more serious. Thanks to all the contributors.

Re: DIY Battery build
It's not really a "requirement" to have a BMS. Checking individual cell voltages can be done with a cheap MM, and balancing of the cells can be done with something like a light bulb and two alligator clips.
A close eye on the voltage (Lith-Ion) or AMP\HR (Lifpo4) will likely (likely) prevent a low voltage fo-pause. An HV overcharge, OTOH will solely rely on the charger, and that's assuming all cells are in balance. But....IMHO....a BMS is cheap insurance on either an overcharge or under-draw of the power in one cell.....and now your batteries are toast. But...my opinion and $1.25 will get you a gas station coffee!! |

Re: DIY Battery build
I’m curious of those that “manually” balance the cells, how often do they get out of balance enough to require balancing?
Thanks all! |

Re: DIY Battery build
No BMS is asking for trouble! You need a BMS to protect the cells from over or under discharge! Balancing is useful too but the important thing is preventing overcharge and preventing over discharge!
