Re: street legal in nj
best thing to do is do some searching for what is legal on NJ. I did a search for the state of KY and I learned that the Golf cart legalities rest on the cities. I then spoke to the local PD and they told me that the city I live in they govern them like bicycles. no use on any road over 35(state wide law) and a single head light and flashing rear light. I then asked that if I were to make it as legal as a car(head lights, tails, brake lights, signals etc.) would that be better. He said yes I would be fine in just about any city. there is one in the city that requires the use of a bike flag but I doubt I will be driving there any time soon.
best thing to do is research and place some calls to the local PD. they should be able to get you on the right path. If not, best route is do what I did, make it just as legal as your car. Good luck to you. |

Thanks for the reply. ( LSVs cannot be modified golf carts
All LSVs must have a 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number ) This is what it says on the dmv site I would like too know if there is away around the 17-digit vin to get it registered like could it be registered as something else? |

Re: street legal in nj
not sure about NJ but you can check in KY we Do Not have to tag a cart or similar vehicle to drive it. we do have to carry liability ins. but that's typical any way. mine is just tagged on with my RV. If you have to tag it some states will let you use the factory serial number, if that is not good enough the state will inspect it to prove it's street legal and they will issue a 17 digit number and a VIN tag that will be riveted some place on the cart. KY does that for any kit car built.
for a cart I would not think that they would tag it but they other stuff could be valid. May want to call the local PD and have a chat or stop by. they are more willing to speak to you at length on things like this in person, in my neck of the woods, plus the local PD around here likes to see what I am building next any way. :) Arin |
