If you do try to repair it, don't be disappointed when it fails. I would do it just for the sake of experimenting, with the knowledge that whatever time and money I put in would be educational to myself or others.

If you just want to get back to golfing get a new battery.

That's kind of my thoughts on this too - the local battery place had a used Trojan for $40. (He said it "checked out good") - so.... for $40 I can get back at it today.

He also said that "the bottoms of these are really thin - you probably wouldn't be happy with the results"

If it was a hole in the top I would say go for a fix but a hole in the bottom isn't going to be an easy reliable fix. It is hard to find anything that battery acid doesn't attack.
