Regen= short for Regenerative Braking
This was club cars early attempt at using the motor to brake the cart and using the energy produced while braking to regenerate charge in the batteries.
Regen 1 or Regen 2 refers to the 1st and 2nd generations which were only a few years each.

The empty plug on the motor is the speed sensor which shouldn’t be necessary for your controller.

I don’t see a run/tow switch on my cart.

Look under the seat. Toggle switch.

If you don't have a run/tow, but you do have the rocker switch for Fwd and Rev, it is a Regen 1.

Here is a Regen 1 schematic.

Mine has a V Glide but no run/tow switch. So it’s like a little of both Regens 1 & 2.

So I guess no matter which one I have I should start with connections and the V Glide and it resistors?

Yes, that is where you should start. (If no run/tow switch, you have a late model Regen 1 and is depicted in the diagram I posted.)

I have a chance to buy a 2002 club car ds for parts. How much of the cart is the same as my 1997?

Default Middle speeds are jerky or not there

Is it the same drive system? Unlikely.
