Club car primary clutch... engine clutch
I picked up another club car. Not sure on the year but it looks very similar to my 87. It has a missing spring and cover from the engine/primary clutch. This is a 4 stroke engine. The guy I got it from gave me a 2 stroke engine with a clutch. Now I got the clutch off the extra engine. Cleaned it up and found it has no springs in it.... (It is designed that way) The question is.... will it work on the club car 4 stroke?? The extra clutch is a tapered shaft. PLEASE say yes it will work....lol

Re: Club car primary clutch... engine clutch
If they are the same style it should work I believe 87 was the last year of he older clutches and 88 on up was a better designed clutch the 88 on up will not work because it won't line up right with your driven clutch post some pictures of the two

Re: Club car primary clutch... engine clutch
Post pictures. The 2-stroke engine would not have come out of a Club Car, they were all 4-stroke since the first gas cart came out in 1984. So without seeing the photos I can't imagine what kind of clutch would be on that motor.

Re: Club car primary clutch... engine clutch
1987 was a crossover year for the clutches, so if you have an '87 it could have come with either the new or the old clutches. Most parts retailers list the newer clutches and components as "1988-up" even though some 1987s had the newer style.

Never question Springbok when it comes to Club Cars.

Ok. I don't think it is going to fit. Looks like it's going to be to wide. I believe that the extra engine is a old ezgo. Any pointers on a low...ish priced clutch?

Re: Club car primary clutch... engine clutch
In your second pic, I can see that you have the old (undesirable) Salsbury-style clutch. That's the old style that Club Car used from 1984-1987-ish. If I were you I'd upgrade both drive and driven clutches or else your drive belt alignment will be off by about a 1/2". The Salsbury clutches (like the one in your photo) stuck out away from the motor about 1/2" further than the newer 1988+ drive clutches. Don't get me wrong, you can still drive it with mismatched clutches, but your drive belt will likely not last as long and your cart will suffer from jerky take offs (I have a buddy who has mismatched clutches on his at the moment).
As far as drive clutches go, any drive clutch listed for a DS from 1988-up will work. Drive clutches are not directional. But with the driven clutches you'll want to find one listed from 1988-1996 (counter-clockwise rotation), unless you plan on upgrading the torque spring, in which case any driven clutch would work. The only operational difference between the 1988-1996 clutches and the 1997-up clutches is that internal spring. 1997-up carts run clockwise. Check out this thread for pics and more information about the different clutches: http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/gas-c...-bad-ugly.html |
