Re: 1986 2 stroke appears to be flooding itself out
Hi guys,
Sorry to resurrect such an old thread, but this one seems to be the closest to my own current issue. I've owned my 86 marathon for about 2 months. It ran perfectly for the first month. But after a while, it started taking a few seconds with the starter motor running before the engine would fire, even when the engine was warm. Now, not only does it take a few seconds to start running, it also seems to starve for gas after about 5 seconds of running and then dies. If I feather the gas I can get it to run longer. If it dies while moving, I can pull my foot all the way off the gas, then stomp it back down and it will run full throttle for another few seconds. This is how I made the 2-mile trip home from the course last weekend. What really has me confused is that I pulled the spark plug in order to check the compression. I decided to leave the plug out and step on the gas in order to see if fuel was being pulled through my clear filter on top of my gas tank. When I did this, the cart blasted about a half-cup of gas out the plug hole, and absolutely soaked me from chest to knees. So I gotta tell ya, after 20 years of wrenching vintage metric iron, including a pair of 2-stroke suzuki triples ('76 gt550 & '73 gt750) I have never seen a fuel-starved 2-stroke belch raw gas... ever. I'm going to pull and soak the carb on the 4th. Anybody experienced this issue, that they can give me some advice? A float and/or needle completely stuck in one position is about the only thing that I can think of that would have this kind of flooding at start-up and starving at full throttle. Any other ideas? |
