Question hard starting G1

If anyone can help.....my G1 is hard starting...have to use the choke and give it gas several times before it will start. It just kind of chugs flat until you choke, give gas, choke give gas, choke, give gas and .....then turns over.
I've tried is just on full choke and gas gas gas, but the choke gas choke gas method works better. Took the generator to be tested...say it's good. It's an original.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
Mike

Sounds like the crankseals need replaced. Do a visual check and see if there are any signs off leakage. Very common problem with these 2 strokes.

Thanks, I don't think they're leaking. Less than 1 year since I replaced them.
I should also add that if you take the spark plug out, and push on gas, motor spins freely. If you plug spark plug hole with finger, the motor bogs down and won't turn over fast.

bodz, before jumping into major stuff start with
is the battery well charged if not it will just turn a couple times and you start over
witht the choke you are giving it fuel that it would normally suck right up.
Start with the cheap stuff.

man i'm lost, I just put this motor back in cause i was having prob last summer. so I rebuilt it again. its doing the same thing. there is no carb on it, no exaust hook up, only 1 belt hooked up to the gen, I have a battery charger on battery. no wires are hooked up to the mag field, just the engine and gen turning the motor over. I press on gas pedle to turn motor over It turn over fine, BUT as soon as I put a spark plug in cyl. forget it it slows way down grrrut grrrut grrut it almost wants to stop. any sugestions anyone help????

If your battery and starter are good then check the wire connections. These carts are getting up there in age and it is not rare to have electrical problems.

bodz, first let me say that I am a novice with these G1 carts, so I am just learning also, but I have considerable experience with cars, specifically old ones.

In brainstorming, I would say that your starter generator is fine. As long as the engine has no compression (plug out), the starter will turn the engine. As soon as you put the plug in, and add compression to the equation making the starter work harder, you state that it wants to die.

Remember that the starter is just that ... for starting. At some point the engine starts (fuel, air, and fire) and the starter turns into a generator to charge the battery, and is driven by the running engine.

Others with a lot more experience can probably advise you what to look for, but from your description it sounds like you never reach the point of the engine firing, and the starter becoming a generator. You need all three to start the engine ... fuel, air, and fire. Very simplistic, but check for each one. My work with old cars would lead me to timing ... the fire is not in sequence with the fuel-air mixture.

IHTH FWIW,
Ogre

Does it do the same thing in forward and reverse?

It starts easier in reverse.
