Default Stripped out oil plug drain plug

I was changing the oil on my g22 and did a bone head move and turned the ratchet the wrong way and stripped the drain plug hole for the oil. Has anyone had a problem like this to fix? I was thinking of using a Heli Coil. Not a lot of room down there and was wondering if anyone could give some advice.

Thanks,
Scott.

Scott,

you can pick up an oversized drain plug at most parts stores. they have cutting threads in them to retap the hole. that will be better than the Heli-coil. Just make sure you put a new gasket on the new plug. that will usually fix it.

Hope that helps.

Now the problem is how do I get the metal shavings out of the oil pan/crankcase? Any ideas?

cheap pocket magnet from the auto parts store or harbor freight. They're like $3 and look like an antenna on an old jam/boom box radio.

The shavings are aluminum, so I don't think a magnet work.

At autozone they have expanding rubber replacement plugs. I have used those for years with a large amount of succes. As for the shavings if you already used the other one if it were me I'd leave the drain plug out and pour oil in the engine and catch it as it comes out.

I use a 1/2"-20 drain plug to repair this problem, i always use an actual tap to cut the threads. i completely cover the tap with grease, the grease will capture the shavings.

You will need to flush out the case to get the metal shavings out.
