Default My muffler overheats. Why?

I have an 81 G1 that I picked up from a mechanic buddy of mine. The thing ran great for over a year then I loaned it out and it came back to with all sorts of issues so here is the list. Thanks for any help or ideas!

Extreme heat from the muffler to the point that it melted the battery.
Double solenoid failure.
Generator failure.

Here is what I've done so far.

New stock muffler, new solenoids, new battery, and a new(used) starter/generator.

The result: muffler still generates a lot of heat and I have noticed a dramatic decrease in overall power both take off and top end. For example, when I get started going the slightest incline will slow the machine to half speed or less.

Any ideas? If you need more info just ask and I'll tell you anything I know about it. Please bear in mind that my username is a fitting title.

Thanks!

Pull a spark plug and check the color,
if rich it could be burning fuel in the muffler,
if lean it could be on the edge of burning the piston.

Did that. Plug is black with just a touch of wetness to it.

Upon further inspection of the plug. When the plug is out of the block if its not grounded and I turn the motor over the coil arcs. If you ground the plug and hit the key the plug fires normally with no arc from the coil. Is that a problem or a coincidence?

That is just the electric finding a way home to ground.

Is the air cleaner clean?
If so you may have some junk in the carb inlet needle.

Thanks for the info. I was suspicious of the air filter as it was dirtier than I expected so I have ordered a new one should be in by Monday.

Hot pipe is likely a lean condition. If the pilot is restricted you could still have a wet dark plug if it was running high RPM

if its not running lean (check plug) then its a restriction issue in the pipe
