That is one thing that is wired wrong. There is a micro switch on the potentiometer(pot) that should trigger the solenoid and power up the controller.
Run the key switch wire to the pot and the pot switch to the solenoid. Much safer that way

Because the solenoid is wired directly to the key and there was a full throttle signal either by actual pedal movement or a short in the signal wires or potentiometer. But I do know it (most likely) will not do it again if you wire the solenoid correctly.

Look in the EZ-GO section in here. There you will find a "sticky" with diagrams. I think your cart is the first diagram. I would look at it closely and trace all your wires.

Have you found the "hot wire" you mentioned smelling? Sounds like you have at least three problems.
