1988 EZGO Marathon 3 Wheeler
Good morning everyone! Long time lurker but first time posting. I have a 1988 ezgo according to the tag on the cart, the motor tag however says the following; Model: EC25-2PG, 244 cc Motor NO: 87-16677. I recently moved and was driving it around the hilly neighborhood and after the struggle on a few hills I did some research and found some good info on running a shorter belt. HP3004 (44.125") or HP3003 (44.875") When I got the machine years ago, it did not have a belt so I went off the 1988 tag and purchased that one (very specific to that year it looks like ? ) The motor tag number being 87-16677 makes me question if its an 87 motor and do I need the HP3004 or is it truly a 88 and I need the HP3003?
I've attached some pictures for reference thanks for reading ! |

Re: 1988 EZGO Marathon 3 Wheeler
I didn't know the 88 required a 1/2" longer belt till I just looked it up, I thought the only engine differences in 88 were the muffler and a bigger carb. You have an 88 muffler but strangely it appears by the choke lever and cable bracket the carb is an 87 and older, the belt for an 88 says 45.5" long and from 87 down it's says just 45" long (according to the Buggies U site). Hmmm, very interesting.....
Think I'd go with the longer 88 belt since they may have moved the engine over a bit for the new style muffler or something?? Sorry I'm not much help on this one, hopefully someone else with more knowledge will chime in...... I think they added the longer belt to change gearing in order to take advantage of the 2 extra horsepower.
DabbleInn is correct that you have the 88 muffler and the 87 carburetor. It also has the 87 nose cowl. I don't believe that you gain the horsepower without having both carburetor and muffler combination. |

Re: 1988 EZGO Marathon 3 Wheeler
thanks for the reply you guys! I am going to try the Dayco HP 3004 today. What is the tell tale sign that it is a 87 carb vs 88? Wondering what the visual difference is. Would there be any benefit to upgrading the carb? right now its setup for premix only, I got rid of the injection setup and the governor as well.

Re: 1988 EZGO Marathon 3 Wheeler
Great idea premixing, when the fuel pump goes bad you won't seize it up. Mix it at 128:1, that's 1oz oil to 1 gallon gas. No more no less....
As far as changing to the larger carb; I have a friend with an 88 and there's not a big noticeable difference at all between it and my 85. In my opinion it's probably not worth the hassle and expense, I removed the Gov on hers a while back so now it can keep up with mine lol..... The tell tale sign I go by in pictures is the choke cable set up, the bigger carb choke lever rotates a different direction. |

I noticed the anti-backfire spring on the throttle cable is in the wrong spot, although it will have the same affect. Here's where it's suppose to go and also a shot of an 88 bigger carb choke lever

Also, I noticed the choke cable for an 88 is not available anymore. Doesn't really matter for your carb though, an 87 or earlier should work fine.
