You can get a brand new OEM 3pg carb from country cat for around $150. I may be mistaken (in which case CA will correct me) but I believe the only difference between 2pg and 3pg carbs is the 2pg uses a slightly smaller jet. In which case you can swap just the jet over to the new carb

I have never worked on a 3pg, so I don't know much about the carburetors. I believe the throttle linkage is different.

It looks like the pilot jet is missing. Item 10.
It might be worth buying a $19 carb for that.

Take a picture of the engine. We can tell which engine it is. Most the carbs are still available OEM if it’s damaged or missing

If it’s there, a can of carb cleaner and an air compressor goes a long way. 100x better than an aftermarket carb

If you want to see if it’ll spit and sputter, use a syringe or something and pour about a bottle cap worth of gas in the spark plug hole. Replace the spark plug and see if she lights up. It should run for a few seconds and die
I did as you said took the spark plug out, and it was dry as a bone.I squirted a little gas in with a turkey baster and it fired up a bit.The spark is very strong on the plug.

Good deal. Once you get the carb sorted then it should run :)

Looking at the pictures above, I can see an 88 muffler. That's the only year it came. You can tell because the pipe is entering the top of the can.

The carburetor picture is about an inch off. If it has a vertical choke shaft, it's a BV-24 that is also an 88.
If it has a horizontal choke shaft, it's a BV-18 which came with all of the other 2PG engines.

What could possibly be missing from the carburetor?

The problem with the $19 amazon carbs is quality control.
They may have the wrong size holes. Some come with only partially drilled holes. Some passages are completely missing. Many come full of shavings.

You may buy a handful and get a good one. That has been known to happen.

My brother crushed the float bowl on his original carb by tightening it too much. I had him buy an amazon carb and swapped bowls. It fit fine.

What are your plans, and what do you want to do with this thing?

This thread has pictures of my 87 carburetor. You can see the horizontal choke shaft and the spring under the throttle lever. That's what prevents backfiring. https://www.buggiesgonewild.com/showthread.php?t=119043
I ordered a 88 carb to match the muffler. I can maybe return it.

Somethings not right, that would mean the 88 has a different intake manifold? Or, perhaps you didn't truly get an 88 carb? Hmmm, I guess that would somewhat explain why you have an 87-older carb, but I'm confused.....

Are you sure you received a BV-24? I didn't know there was an outside physical dimensional difference between that and a BV-18.
