Re: EZGO Workhorse Project
First I like to thank all the guys here for the help, support and compliments. I always said that I should have scratched this project the second I took the body off the frame. I got into it way too deep to stop and now like so many here I'm not sorry I did. Without the help of my son Jeremy, Chris my fiance, Brad and Rick the welders, my grandaughter Hannah and you guys, I wouldn't have been as far as I am now.
It's Sunday morning, I slept late, I'm 59 years old and I'm fricking tired. Today If I get the Buckboards for the box built and the garage cleaned (again), I'll be happy, I searched for years for a decent set of plans for the cnc router becuase I couldn't afford a new one. Just another toy I always wanted. I got the plans at http://www.solsylva.com/. This guy really had all the bugs out of the plans. It took 6 weeks part-time to build and under $800. So yes, I built the router also. Got a few videos of it on youtube. Chris (fiance) came up with the names for the box. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqEgbi5VNxc We all play the guitar, so this was a fun one for me, Jeremy (son) and nephew Chris Brown (his guitar). Chris is an awesome player and put together the youtube video. Will post the buckboards as soon as I get them on. |

Re: EZGO Workhorse Project
That 1st scratch is gonna be a b**ch. Has to happen eventually. Box is apart for sanding and finishing this week. We'll post some pics of the work.
Might be good to explain the process of finishing in case anyone decides to do something similar. |

Re: EZGO Workhorse Project
I'm sure there's many of you out there who can add something to this post. I don't have the equipment to spray with urethane's so I still spray with laquer's. The wood was sealed with a catylized clear laquer 1st to prevent the black laquer paint from bleeding into raw wood. Any excess paint that got past the edges can easily be sanded off after the 2 coats of black, which are applied with a brush. You can clearly see the sloppy black that got past the engraved area. Tomorrow I will post pictures of the sanded surface which will clean all that up. After the surface is sanded it will be sprayed again with 4 more coats of clear laquer. I'm using Campbell's "Magnalac". I'll dull the finish to a satin with a scotchbrite pad. I sprayed our wood treads with this product and it had not worn in 10 years.
The inside surfaces of the box will be cleared before assembly. Any edges that need to be glued will be taped off to prevent the clear from sealing the wood and not accepting the glue. The inside is almost impossible to spray smooth. You will get bounce off the overspray that will dry rough and need further sanding. Corners at this point would take forever to get smooth. Imagine trying to paint the inside of a box with a spray can. |
