Default Brand new batteries draining too quickly

Hi Everyone,

Joined this great forum in the beginning of the year, but having an issue which i would kindly appreciate any advice.

I bought a 99 EZGO TXT in June and shortly after fitted 6x brand new T105 Trojan batteries with new cables. The wheels, controller etc of the cart is completely original with a Lester II charger.

The issue i am having is a feel the batteries are going flat too quickly. I am from South Africa and stay in a Golf residential estate. After a round of golf the state of charge meter will show only half full, as where my previous TXT's with new batteries would still show full or only drop 1 bar.

My brothers TXT with 2 year old Trojan batteries still shows full on the state of charge meter after a round of golf on the same day and weather conditions.

The cart in question has no aftermarket electronic devices installed. When the Cart is not in use, it is on charge, weather i run around with it for a while or just down the road, i put it on charge immediately after use.

-Charger seems to be working the way it should and shuts down.
-battery water is filled to the correct spec.
-Terminals are tight and batteries are clean and dry.

The shop who supplied and fitted the batteries recommended replacing the SoC meter as they thought it was faulty, i have done this and the problem persists.

Yesterday after using the cart in the afternoon i put it on charge and did a voltage check this morning with the below results;

Battery no 1- 6.41
Battery no 2- 6.42
Battery no 3 - 6.43
Battery no 4- 6.41
Battery no 5- 6.42
Battery no 6- 6.42

Battery pack - 38.5

I am unable at the moment to do a load test as i cannot hold the terminals in place and drive the cart at the same time.

Is there anything i can look out for in the mean time?

Apologies for the long post

Regards,
Alex

Go play a round of golf, then wait 20 minutes, then read pack voltage (before plugging in charger). Let's see just how much was taken out during that round of golf.

Can you get specific gravity readings on each battery? Can help pin point bad battery or cell.

Thank you everyone for your replies.

The battery supplier came out and did a proper test, his feed back is that they are 100%. i was not home at the time, so do not know the exact voltage figures.

He did replace the cables from the SOC meter to the batteries.

Tonight i took a drive to test and happy to report battery level on the meter definitely stayed full for longer.

I decided to try do a small test driving around with the accelerator peddle always 3/4 or fully flat;

I did in total 16.28km (10.11 miles)
Average speed:19 km/h (11 m/h)
Top speed: 29km per hour (18 miles per hour)
Time duration: 52 minutes

This was road driving but mixed with hills and with the lights on.

Got home, let the batteries rest for 30 min then did a pack voltage check and got 37.8

I believe that is 90% full, if i am correct?

Would appreciate any feedback if the figures sound correct.

Regards,
Alex

Thank you for your prompt reply.

Does losing 10% within the given mileage covered and conditions more a less sound correct to you?

Driving 10 miles in just under 1 hour at 3/4 to full throttle and only using 10% of your battery capacity sound really good for a 36 volt battery pack. No problem with those batteries.

As mentioned, your runtime/range is excellent now, however it may not have been so good back in June when the batteries were new.

New batteries only have about 75% of their rated capacity until the have been broken in, which takes a couple dozen charge cycles or more.

Also, batteries are rated at 80°F (26.7°C) and the cooler they are, the less storage capacity they have. Considering June is in the middle of winter in the southern hemisphere, that may have been a significant factor also.

Thank you to everyone for their input.

I played around of golf, and after letting the batteries rest for about 30 min i checked the pack voltage and got 37.4 . Not sure if that is great for the round, the SOC meter dropped 2 bars, while my brothers 36v TXT (identical) did not drop any. Batteries are only 5 months old, so will see if it gets better in the future incase the 'break in' process is still busy.

The cart also cuts out maybe once a month and comes to a stand still. After stopping completely you can drive again. I have been told to replace the solenoid, i hope this corrects it.

Have a great week everyone
