Also know that over-tightening can cause this same melted lug issue.
The problem is that the lead is soft and the stud is actually an upside-down bolt with the hex head inside the lead. If you get too aggressive tightening it then you can shift the hex end incased inside the lead and it will make poor contact. Poor contact makes heat. Heat melts lead. |

Correct torque for battery stud nuts is 95 to 105 in/lb (INCH/Pounds) or 7.9 to 8.75 ft/lb.
