You keep saying Resistor/Diode....The diode must be wired in reverse across the two small connections on the solenoid coil...if it isn't it will blow immediately..as it will short out the coil...the diode is there to discharge the induced voltage that happens when the solenoid is switched off...high voltage /low current or spike...the induced voltage comes from the collapsing magnetic field when the solenoid is switched off...the polarity of this induced voltage is in reverse from the original voltage that was on the coil to turn it on...so the neg lead of the diode goes to the small positive terminal on the solenoid
