2011 st express 48v A/C or D/C motor

A friend of mine has a 2011 ST express and wants to have the motor rewound for higher speeds. I'm not sure if an A/C motor is one you can do the mod to? How do you tell?

I believe the RXV and the 2five are the only EZGOs with AC motors. And there is this: http://www.ezgo.com/personal/leisure/st_express.html
