I don't know for sure but it might be an issue.
I have this charger for my cart and when it powers up it starts on AGM and I have to switch it to Wet, I had read when researching the charger it does that to protect the AGM's

Oops. I had it backwards.

Thanks for the correction.

Slight highjack question.

(Assume the aux battery vs. reducer is decided in favor of aux battery.)

If one were to consider adding a 12 volt accessory battery, to power lights (110 or so watts) and a stereo (around 100 watts), and they had no battery or charger, would an AGM battery charger combo lead to a lower annual cost than conventional lead-acid?

I believe AGM batteries and AGM compatible chargers tend to be more expensive, but other than that, the life expectancy of similar AH batteries should be about the same.

That's only about a 20A load, so something the 100AH neighborhood would probably last for a decade or more if you kept it reasonably well charged.

So why do most industrial emergency lighting and UPSs use AGM? I'd think cheapest would rule.?

I'm still in the 2005 or lower mode. They may have changed with cheaper LED lights.

I'm in no way trying to push this brand, but I do feel some of the following info to be beneficial to read! It explains some of the questions asked in this thread!

Least overall expense.
Having to check electrolyte levels periodically would add to overall expense.
Also, any maintenance manager worth their salt would strive to reduce their crew's workload, even if the projected overall cost as well as the initial cost was greater.

Stand alone UPSs have spill proof batteries, but some of the larger battery back-up systems use conventional wet cells. However, that might be a legacy issue, I'm not familiar with what is being used with newer systems.

You're right. Our 12.47 and 25 kV switchgear uses a HUGE bank of lead-acid batteries for 24 and 125 volt backup to the breakers and HMIs.

We did use deep cycle batteries in UPS's until the battery market changed to more specialized batteries for UPS's with higher discharge rates. I know the AGM technology use to limit plate thickness which is why they are not popular as deep cycle batteries.

The reason most companies don't go with wet cell batteries in UPS installations is due to capital costs to install them. Plus, added safety requirements needed to install vented/flooded batteries. VRLA/AGM are sealed and do not need room, fire and ventilation requirement like wet cells.
