Re: Older ezgo charger capacitor
So we have confirmation that a charger that looks a LOT like the OP's uses 20 mF.
I have round and "oval" ones that would work in my cap boxes. My 20 mF is 680 volt rated. I have extra brackets if you end up getting a cap that doesn't fit yours. Shape doesn't really matter, just the capacitance and voltage rating. A motor RUN capacitor would work just fine, but a motor START cap won't last. |

Re: Older ezgo charger capacitor
thanks guys, I really appreciate your replies.
I'm gonna roll the dice and buy the 20 mf. I guess its only $30. If it doesn't work, I'll have a bigger pile of parts. thanks again. btw diyparts sucks |

Re: Older ezgo charger capacitor
YIKES! $30? What is the width and thickness, and I'll send you one for free.

Re: Older ezgo charger capacitor
Mine's 2-3/4" X 1-3/4". Height is around 5", but that shouldn't be any problem in that beast.

Re: Older ezgo charger capacitor
I just tested it and it tests good, and has an external bleed resistor, which "normally" is a good thing, but "may" affect a ferro-resonant circuits. Worst case, just remove it. I have a side mount bracket, kinda like the one on Crash's pic.
Just PM your address and I'll send it to tomorrow. Save a buck or two, and eliminate garage clutter. |

Re: Older ezgo charger capacitor
Here is how to find out if 20mfd is in the ballpark.
Disconnect the wires going to the diodes and measure between the two wires with a voltmeter. Without the capacitor, you should get about 60VAC. With the capacitor, it should be about 90VAC. If the capacitor is the wrong value, the boosted voltage will be considerably higher than, or lower than 90VAC. |

Re: Older ezgo charger capacitor
Heck if you want, I can mail you several values, which you can "play with". You can hook them up and series or parallel to find a good match.
That's the way I used to find correct PFC values. |

Re: Older ezgo charger capacitor
Since the transformer and cap are matched, I suspect while you may be able to get 48 volts out, you probably wouldn't have an ideal voltage to current profile for your batteries, but just guessing here.
I have an old ferro-resonant power conditioner. If I recall, I could feed it a "wide" range of input voltages, and it would output rock solid 120 volts. |
