Default g16 Compression issue new engine!

Hello,

In February I put a brand new engine in a 98 g16as, he was driving it the other day and it just died. I have went through everything and now I find out when I put a compression guage on it that it shoots up to 30 pounds or so when you first hit the pedal then goes up no more. Then if you stop cranking it and hit the pedal again it shoots up to 60 or so, it will repeat this process up to about 110 pounds. It seems to only get compression when you first hit the pedal then stops. I adjusted the valves and same thing. I have a leak down tester coming today once it arrives I was going to try a leak down test. Has anyone else had a similar problem? This new engine can't have 20 hours on it!

Thanks!
Bob

When checking the compression, do you have the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor? The throttle/butterfly needs to be wide open.

I'm at a loss on this thing. Unless the new motor was bad and has failed. I'll be getting a leak down tester this morning I guess that is the next step. The air filter was pretty dirty they use the cart like a 4 wheeler on fields but I can't imagine that caused something to fail. The only other thing I can think of is they had corn stalks in the engine compartment I wonder if they could of knocked out a seal by the clutch. I do know on a snowmobile sometimes a belt shredding can take that seal out, perhaps a corn stalk could too?

got about 12-13% on the leak down test. According to the tester that is in the green and good, I see another thread on here where someone says anything over 10% is a problem. Anyone have any input? I did feel some air coming back up the carburator a little, intake valve problem? I checked exhaust and it's not plugged.

How are these engines timed? It acts like it possibly jumped time with the eratic compression readings. Is it like a lawn mower engine where the flywheel is the timing and have a small keyway that could have sheered?
