Slop/clanking noise from steering G1
When going over bumps I've always heard a clanking noise. Well I thought it was the tie rods but I got under there and the noise I hear is from the steering box. I tried to tighten the nut but it didn't help. Is it something with the box or is there too much play in the tie rod ends?

hmm could be play with the bushings or the steering rack is worn down enough you hear metal. when you turn the wheel hard left or right do you hear it too? jack up the front of your cart and grab each wheel and shake it back and forth...you should be able to eventually find the worn out component

Pushing up on the nut you tightened may be able to replicate the noise. If so, there is an adjustment on top of the box that can be made to tighten it up some. Just be sure to make very small adjustments & spin the wheel back & forth often to check for binding (this will be the limiting factor in how much slack you can adjust out).

So yeah I can grab the tie rods and move them and the clanking is coming from the steering box just above that big nut. Where is that adjustment nut or bolt?

Adjustment on the front side of the steering box lift the front of of the cart there is a jam nut you need to loosen then tighten the bolt until you feel binding when turning the steering wheel then back the bolt off 1/4 ish turn until binding no longer exists and tighten jam nut ....If I remember right the jam nut is 8 or 10mm nut

You need to be careful with that pre-load adjustment. You can over do it, even though you don't have any binding, it can put excess load on the pins that are inside the box and cause them to prematurely wear. Where I am, I see it quite a bit on these older cars with that style of steering.

Packing the box with grease does help the "clunking" noise along with the adjustment of the pitman set screw.
