Default Bearing Bad News

Hello all.

My trusty 1998 G16A has been trouble free since de-bugging and mod.s in 2012. Lately I've been hearing a squeaking noise coming from the driver's rear wheel. I jacked the cart up and it was obvious from the wobble in the shaft and residual metal shavings that the sealed outer bearing was failing. Jumped on line and got some conflicting information. Some info. indicated that the axle and bearing had to be replaced as a unit, others showed axles and bearings for sale separately. I didn't see any axle/bearing units for sale on the parts sites, so I ordered a pair of bearings. Can the old ones be pressed off and new ones pressed on? Are there aftermarket axles available that will accommodate bearing replacement?

Thanks, in advance, for your help.

Best Regards to All

Great! Thanks, Smallblock. Too bad Yamaha put in sealed bearings instead of letting the gear oil lube them but they lasted almost 20 years. Just like my body-everything requires maintenance sooner or later.

There is an axle seal on the inside of the axle tube, but with sealed bearings, very little chance gear lube could into the brakes. I peronally like Yamaha useing sealed bearing on rear axle and front hubs....less maintance

Is a kind of whining noise from back there, under deceleration, a symptom of this?

Mine was a metal on metal grinding sound. Whines often happen when gears don't mesh properly or when my wife gets upset.
