Default Yamaha G1 negative sparking and smoking

Just put a Motor in G1 and when I connect the negative battery cable it archs and smokes.

Does anyone know what I should check.

Any help is much appreciated

Stating the obvious first no offense but it's happened here before make sure you have + and - hooked correct on battery if they are right find wiring digram (believe there is one in the sticks) and start tracing wired

Something is wired wrong, plain and simple. Get a diagram and go point to point. Its a PIA but its what needs done.

Ok, so I replaced the end casing on the starter (brush end) new brushes in case . I tapped the end of the starter and it started cranking but the solinoids were smoking. Mind you the pedal was not pushed. Any idea?????
