Default 05 carryall 2 with a fe290?

I have an 2005 Carryall 2 i just bought that didn't have an engine. According to the 05 manual with pedal start, it originally came with a FE350. I've had a hard time finding the same engine at a decent price to go back in and keep it pretty much stock. I did find a FE290 out of a 03 Carryall 1 thats a runner and decided to jump on it for only $100.00. Is the 290 good enough to power the cart? I've read where people have tuned them to get a little more torque by advancing the flywheel timing, changing the jet in the carb, and putting a stiffer spring in the driven clutch. I know this may not remedy the difference ( 9HP vs 11HP ) for the bigger engine, but if i can get it somewhat close, I'll be happy.

I dont know from experience, my carryall has the 350 and is a beast when it comes to towing or hauling stuff. I recently acquired a john deere gator though, that has a FE290 in it. I haven't gotten it running yet, have an order on the way with new rod, rings, etc... but I would have to think if the 290 is good enough for a gator it would be fine in a carryall.

I don't see why it won't work fine. A bit less hp.

While I do have a 97 Carryall 2 plus with the Fe350 in it that does have good strong power and pulls like a tank, I'll have that to compare to. I did a search on the fe290 getting more power like 15hp, is that even possible? Sounds like the engine wouldn't last long.

Really depends what you want to do with it in the end, but the 290 has plenty of power if you ask me. Put a torque spring in the clutch and it should be fine for most things.

I use our 98 DS with a 290 to pull cars and trucks around in the parking lot. Also use it to pull a steel roller that's probably 800-1000lbs that we use for packing down gravel, dirt, etc. I also use it to tow other carts back to the shop on occasion. It does that with only minor difficulty on the steepest part of the hills.

Thanks Fairtaxman4me, I feel more confident about the fe 290 now. What I do with my carts is pretty much what you do. I drag things around that around 1000, and little more. Did you modify both clutches on your cart or just one?

I don't think I'd try and do too much to increase the performance of the 290. Most performance upgrades sacrifice reliability and longevity. But, As I said, my Gator has a stock 290 in it and easily weighs a few hundred pounds more than what a carryall weighs. The only thing that I could see making a difference between the 290 in a gator and a carryall is the clutching. The clutches in a gator are HUGE in comparison to my carryall. If you got a good set of performance clutches for the carryall that 290 may outperform your 350 :)

Yes, exactly. That's what I was thinking. I would rather have reliability over speed. Modifying the clutches sounds like the best thing to do.

Haven't yet modified anything with the clutches on that cart, but I probably will put a torque spring in the secondary when I decide to rebuild it.
I did replace the primary with an aftermarket earlier this year but it's essentially stock.
When pulling the roller on fresh gravel it has to get a little bit of a running start, otherwise the cart will sink into the gravel and the tires will just dig and spin. I have a big custom made wood bed on the back that's maybe 150 lbs, custom bed mount and custom trailer hitch, so there is some weight on it.

I do have a torque spring in the secondary clutch on our Transporter 6 seater cart, and wound the sheave an extra 1/3 of a turn to get a bit more pre-load on it and it made a heck of a difference climbing hills. Really don't notice any difference in overall top speed, just takes a little bit longer to get there.
