Default Gas Precedent Issues

Just got this precedent today, so far liking it.

Couple of issues however, hoping yall can shed some light,

First of all, it is super slow off the line, like really slow. It will hit 26 mph on flat ground once it gets going. I do not believe it has modified rear end gearing, its revving fairly high at 26 mph but i dont think its too dangerously high revving.

Secondly, the gas pedal is literally all or nothing, engine starts after about 2 inches of travel and is basically at full throttle, something is definitely wrong with that, no idle or crawl. i assume just cable/rod adjustments? Can these 2 things be related?

3rd, the roof it super loose, it kind of flexes side to side and the movement it in the places where it connects to the front cowl and in the rear where the backrests are held on, is it supposed to move around or no?

any comments or suggestions are welcome, im just starting to learn how this thing really works...

Which engine does it have? Carburetted or EFI? If you’re not sure post a pic and we can tell.
That cart is definitely modified. It’s got a stretch kit to add the extra seat. Those kits also have to lengthen the rods for the throttle and brake pedals. More than likely the throttle rod is adjusted a little tighter to increase Top speed. This usually makes it so the throttle plate on the engine is already open when the engine starts, which gives you no control at slower speed. Ideally the engine should start turning before the throttle plate moves. You’ll need a helper or a long stick to push on the Go pedal while you watch the throttle lever on the throttle body for movement. I don’t remember if it’s a rod or cable, but the adjustment on the precedent is under the floor in the pedal box. There should be an access plate under the rubber floor mat to get to the throttle and brake adjustments.
Look in the engine compartment for a Maintenance or Service mode switch. The switch allows you to run the engine with the trans in neutral when working on the cart. It’s also a good idea to raise the rear wheels off the ground and put the cart on jack stands when working, so it doesn’t accidentally drive off and run you or someone else over.


Two things that kill your low end torque are the larger than stock tires, and the extra weight from the rear seat kit and the stretch kit. You can get some of that back by having the driven clutch machined, and adding a torque spring and a heavy duty drive belt. Cartpartsplus (one of our site sponsors) for info on clutch mods.
Also make sure your tires are properly inflated. With the weight of that cart, you should probably have around 20-22psi in the rear tires, and 18-20 in the front.

Roof should not wobble around but they do often end up loose. Remove the plastic caps at the bottom of the roof struts and tighten the bolts that hold it to the cart. The attachment of the roof struts on the precedent is not great IMO. There’s only on bolt on each side in the front, and the rear is held on basically with just plastic. It may be different on yours depending on how the rear seat kit is installed, but be sure to check the strut attachment hardware at the back as well.
It’s a weak point that causes problems even on the standard carts. With the extra weight of the extended roof it’s going to wobble loose more often.

Thanks for the great info, today i got the cables adjusted pretty well. It now will idle and drive along at slow speeds, throttle can be modulated decently well. Also still hitting 25 mph. I still feel like there is too much pedal travel before the starter engages though. Its also backfiring now a lot, i need to make sure throttle is completely closing.

Tire pressure checked and going to look into the roof tomorrow, hopefully i can get it tightened up!


Also looking into clutch machining and spring upgrade... does this affect top speed?
