Default check controller amps

is there any way to check the amps coming off of the controller? i imagine it would have to be measured at WOT but would that reflect what amperage the controller is? (ie - a 275a controller should register 275a, a 400a should register 400a, etc)

i am trying to determine if i have a souped up controller or if it is, in fact, a 275a controller stock controller.

thanks in advance.

No simple test for this. Post pics of the controller and all info you can find on it.

If you got an inductive DC clamp-on ammeter you might be able to measure max current. You'd have to be real quick though as max current is only drawn the first second on a full throttle take-off. A helper would be required.

I had the same question. Purchased what I was told was a upgraded to 400 amp controller, but have no way of telling if I got the real deal or a scam. Guess you get what you pay for. I can notice no difference between the original 225 amp and the 400 amp supposed upgrade on the same model controller. It would be nice if there was an easy test for it.

sport, it just so happens that i do have a clamp on ammeter. could i do the test with the cart on jacks and get an accurate reading or would the cart need to be under the load of it's own weight?

thanks in advance.

Double check your clamp on ammeter, most only measure AC voltage and do not have a DC selection. You cannot check max current on jack stands. Your cart must be under full load and even then it will only pull max alps from a stop for the first second of full throttle take off.

my fluke measures both. sounds like i need to take the seat off though to test it properly. which cable would i need to clamp? the main cable coming from the controller to the motor?

Any main cable on the cart. Current is the same throughout. If your fluke has a peak hold that would make it very easy to do by yourself.

Re check your amp reading capacity

A meter that can test 2-300 DC amps would cost BIG bucks.
A quick search online will show what I mean.....
I thought my fluke meters could read 10a max. Beyond that they will fry.

A clamp-on DC ammeter even by Fluke can be under $200 and can easily handle 400-600 amps DC depending on model.
