Re: How to know which hole to put yamaha umax spring tangs in
I've been testing it out today.....It has way more torque, but I found out a problem I have/caused......lol The circlip is evidently still on the shaft. I thought it was part of the shaft, cause I couldn't find a way to take it off. Not much room up in there with just the wheel off......I think I'll take the body off when I fix the stuff. My questions are.....First how do you take the circlip off? Thats probably why I lost a few mph off my top speed.....Second which way do you spin the sheave to preload the spring?

Re: How to know which hole to put yamaha umax spring tangs in
There are special (circlip) pliers to take one off, but you could just cut it off with a pair of side cutters. Clean that area up, you don't want any dirt in the workings.
You load it up so the ramps on the sheave, are up against the shoes. Thats why I said to nudge the car forward (in forward gear) to turn the input shaft while holding the sheave still. And much easier to do with the body off!! |

The"circlip" that is stuck on the shaft is the old spacer.

Re: How to know which hole to put yamaha umax spring tangs in
ok, Thanks for all the help guys.....No wonder I couldn't preload the spring by clamping it. It had more pressure from 2 spacers! lol Anyways so I need to hold the sheave still and move cart forward. So basically rotating the sheave clockwise?

Re: How to know which hole to put yamaha umax spring tangs in
Ok took everything apart, and removed the spacer, and now it only has 1 spacer. I put the spring tangs in the holes, and put the clamp on the sheave. I had my dad hold it steady while I rotated the axle forward. That turned the spring seat forward, and once it was forward, and preloaded we clamped the sheave into place. The ramp shoes were riding on the ramps, and everything looked good. I stuck the keyway n, and the outer sheave. I got it on all the way, then we removed the clamp. Everything looked like it was suppose to. Shoes still riding on the sheaves ramps. I got the belt on it, and put it in neutral. I accelerated, and when I stopped... the ramp shoes were no longer touching the sheaves ramps.....? Its just floating in the middle. You can move it back and forth between the sheaves ramps..,,,whats up with this? I test drove it, and it has just barely anymore torque than the stock spring......I'm not sure what to do now. Any help would be great thanks.

Sounds like we need pictures. Any chance you didn't get the fixed sheave on correctly. Could it have slipped or sheared off the key, and allowed the sliding sheave rotate past the helix?

Re: How to know which hole to put yamaha umax spring tangs in
The fixed sheave is still solid. I can't move it at all. I put the key in the slot and just tapped it down in.....I then slid the fixed sheave over it, and tightened the nut. I'll try to get pictures tomorrow. Its aggravating , because everything looked perfect when I put it back together.....lol The only thing I can think is one of the tangs popped out of the hole it was in maybe, and just spun around and went into another..??? Is that possible? I guess I'm just gonna have to take it off again....lol Maybe 3rd times a charm....

Slayer, I've never had a problem with one, so I can't tell ya! Smallblock or somebody like that, that has seen a lot of problems may be able to help here. I'm three for three, so can't help, having no experience.
