Default 1979 Robin Engine # EC25DS

Greetings. I am new to the golf cart world and new to this site. It looks as though there is a lot of useful information on here that has already helped me out. I bought the EZGO cart and was told it only needed an ignition coil which was completely missing. I purchased an ignition coil from a golf cart dealer. I bought the new plug wire and plug from a local auto store. Plug is the right plug but I just bought a generic plug wire. I also found that the micro switch and ignition switch were bad and replaced them. Now the motor finally turns over. I also dumped and cleaned the fuel tank and replaced the fuel filter and fuel lines. Now I have another problem. I am only getting spark out of the plug when I first hit the gas pedal. If I let off the pedal and reapply I get spark once. I'm looking for a little guidance here. Hopefully someone can lead me in the right direction. Many thanks in advance.

Welcome to BGW!
That motor should have a points-type ignition. Check to see if the points are breaking. Check to make sure the wires going into the engine are in good shape and not shorting against anything. Check for loose connections. It could possibly be the condenser.
This is a link to a manual that includes that motor.

You should be able to take the wire off the negative side of the coil, put a meter between that wire and ground, and check resistance. When you turn the motor over slowly by hand, you should see on the meter when the points break. They should break once per revolution of the motor.

i am not a real good meter guy. what settings do I need my meter to be on. also there is two wires on my coil. one that goes into a harness and the other goes right to ground. The one that goes right to ground looks to be an after thought by the previous owner.

From the diagram, this is what I see...
The coil should have a + and - terminal on it. The + terminal should have +12 volts on it. The +12v goes through a couple of switches before getting to the coil. The - side of the coil shouldn't be going to ground. It should have a black wire connected to it. That black wire comes from inside the engine, and is connected to the points. Look at the wires coming out of the motor and see if there is a black wire there, and where it is going.

There is a black wire going from the coil (-) into the motor. There also another wire (put on by someone) going from the coil (-) to the chassis ground. From what I can see the other wire shouldnt be there. It is causing the coil to be grounded all the time. Am I correct in my assumption?

OK, now you can check the points break like in the previous post.
Do you have a digital meter with resistance/ohms(Omega symbol) setting on it?
