Default Relay coil suppression methods

I know the standard method is to install a diode for clamping transients, but was talking with someone who recommended another (additional) method.
He referenced a couple articles:

Coil_Suppression_Can_Reduce_Relay_Life.pdf

Relay_Coil_Transient_Suppression.pdf

Anyone familiar with using a zener in series with the suppression diode?
