Default battery arcing

New to the site but thanks in advance. Had to get (2) new batteries about a month ago. Now one of them is junk. When I hook up the last battery cable I was getting a rather big arc but just one time. If I left the cable off for a while it would do it again. Any suggestions on where to start?

Probably a DC to DC voltage converter charging the capacitors.

You can hold a 60w light bulb in series with the last cable for a few seconds before touching the cable directly to the battery post.

The resistance of the light bulb will allow the capacitors to charge without a spark.
