Question Radio

Have a new radio in the monster cart. Marine radio. Dual
Water proof. But when I step on the gas it cuts out. It doesn't cut off but the volume goes dead. This is on a seperate 12 volt battery to. Is the controller doing this you think.

Use some aluminum air conditioning tape to cover the inside of your controller cover. That should help cut down on the interference.

Wink Re: Radio

I don't have a cover on the controller. It's mounted over the motor.

Andy,

Does the volume die on both AM and FM?
If you have a Audio Input (MP3/CD player etc.), does it act the same way?

Pulsed DC controllers and brush type motors can put out a lot of electrical noise and the cables associated with them make great transmitting antennae.

Radios will pick up the noise by one or more of three ways. The radio's AM and/or FM antenna, power input cable and through the radio's chassis itself.

You can put filters on the power input and add shielding to the radio's chassis, but the only thing that can be done for the radio antennae is move them as far away from the electrical noise source as possible, which may or may not help very much since you can't get very far away from the noise source.

In the FWIW Department. I have a pair of hearing protectors with a built in radio I use while mowing my lawn (aka - harvesting weeds) on a riding lawnmower. I tried it on my GC and couldn't pick up a AM station whose transmitting antenna is visible from my back porch. Than I upgraded to 2ga cables and cleaned all the contacts in the process. The earmuff radio works almost perfectly now. I still get a little whine in the background when accelerating or pulling hard, but they were totally unusable before.

A suggestion for others that are thinking about installing a radio in your cart.
Set up an AM radio outside someplace, tune it between stations or to a very weak one and have somebody accelerate your cart in close proximity to the radio while you listen to it.
If your cart is really noisy, you might want to consider an audio amp with a MP3 or CD input rather than a radio.
