Default 1996 DS 48V questions

I am very new at golf carts, just got a 1996 DS. I could not get it to charge so I jumped the charger relay and it is charging fine. I have to unplug the charger or it will overcharge my batteries eventually with the bypass right? How long do I let it charge (38.6v across the pack) before I unplug it approximately? Also, is there any local alternative to the charger relay I could get from my local auto parts store? Pretty sure its bad. Checked grey wire, fuse and jumped that before I did the charger relay. Only thing that worked was jumping the charger relay.

Ok. Stupid question, do I need to wait after I unplug the charger to measure for that 51 volts?

If the 48v pack is reading 38, let the charger run for about 14-16 hours. Measure the pack 12 hours after taking it off the charger

12 hrs it is. If I leave it longer than I will do damage right? Also, should I see the amp meter drop as the charge gets higher? About 12-13 now
