Default 2010 Precedent brake question

Working on a 2010 refurbished Precedent. The problem is obvious, but the cause is not obvious to me. The right side brakes are evenly worn and about 1/2 way through the lining. The rear shoe on the left side is similar to those on the right side, but obviously the forward left side shoe has taken a beating. When I slacked of the brake cables they were both properly connected to the spreader.

Why would this one shoe wear so badly and mostly on the bottom half of the lining?

I see it on a daily basis. Simple answer....Brakes were improperly adjusted.

I thought the brakes were self-adjusting.

Ahhhhh, that is the thought, the problem is the system is not perfect, combine that with improper service/or a mechanic that thinks they know what they are doing and it makes it worse and causes the brakes to wear prematurely or irregular.

In younger days of doing drum brakes on cars/trucks oddly worn drums and shoes were almost always were the result of stiff cam action pivots and adjusters that didn't...

I'm with Golf cart guy on this one. This seems to be the norm. After 15 years of it, I see more of them like this than not.

I had uneven brake wear on my DS - with one shoe worn paper thin and the other about half way. Since I was the guy putting the mileage on - I knew it wasn't adjustment - and the lower sliders were "sliding" properly. Turned out to be a worn outer axle bearing on the driver side. Replaced both outer axle bearings and the uneven wear (as well as odd creaking noise when brakes were applied) went away.

Thx for the info! Did you notice any symptoms when driving the cart with a failing wheel bearing?

Sorry....I note you mentioned a creaking sound. I was wondering if there was any wobbling or something like that.

Actually the creaking and occasional (very soft sounding) scraping sound when applying brakes was the only indication. At first, I thought the sliders had frozen - so I judiciously cleaned and lubed them....but nothing changed when I did that. However the creaking on brake application did seem to get progressively more persistent (from occasional to always).

At speed, there was no audible indication that the bearing was worn. Even stranger is that when I removed the axles, I couldn't feel anything obvious when man handling that bearing.

But it was apart so I replaced both bearings & seals anyway. And Tadaa....all noise gone - brake pedal became just slightly higher (I'm guessing drum was rotating in a very minuscule oval when brakes applied; which may have limited self-adjust just a tiny bit).
