Actual Flames
The good news is that I put my new wheels on today and took my partial cart out for a spin around the block. That new XCT500 controller is great.
After running it around for 30 minutes or so, I put it in the garage, switched it to tow, and plugged in the charger. I went in the house and in a few minutes I heard something out in the garage. I opened the door to find my charger in flames and lots of smoke. I unplugged it and took it outside to air out. The SOC meter is still reading 37.8 Volts. I have a few questions: I assume the charger is destroyed?? Is there something that I could have done to cause this? Is there anything on the cart itself that I could have damaged? Thanks Rick |

Re: Actual Flames
Which charger do you have, make and model. Open it up and see how far the damage went. If the transformer survived, you may be able to replace the capacitor, and/or boards, and/or rectifiers. If the transformer is dead, the whole thing's basically dead.

Re: Actual Flames
It is a Powerwise II by Lester. It is the charger that came with my cart and looks like it has been put away wet a few times.
Could this have hurt my cart? |

Re: Actual Flames
Does the cart run? If so, nothing bad happened to the cart.

Re: Actual Flames
Cart seems to run fine. I ran up and down the road with no new issues.
I opened the charger and found a few wires burned through and a strong burned smell. There is a fuse in a round window in the front of the charger that seems to be burned through. |

Good thing you were home and caught it before it got worse.

Re: Actual Flames
I would toss that charger.... you are rebuilding the cart, I would get a new charger too.

After further inspection this morning, I have found some more wires actually burned through. I don't think there is any way that I could repair it or would trust my repair to work correctly. On the other hand, my cart is starting to look like a cart. IMG_0480.jpg |
