Winter storage
Okay, now that I've got my cart running, we will be putting it into storage soon. In Minnesota, our winters can be very cold, so I am asking what I need to do to prep for the cold winter. Cart will be stored indoors, but unheated.
Thanks in advance. |

Re: Winter storage
Keep those batteries charged, charged, charged. Put a few miles on it anytime it is possible and recharge.

Re: Winter storage
I agree with the comment above, freezing dead batteries will ruin them.

Re: Winter storage
The electrolyte in a fully charged cart battery freezes at about -92°F and about -4°F at 50% SoC.
Irreversible sulfation of the plates becomes a very significant factor at 70% SoC and below. Cart batteries self discharge at about 1% per day, so they will be down to about 70% SoC in 30 days. You will have to check with a DVM, but most likely you'll have to recharge batteries at least every month. Even if your charger has a float charge feature, you still want to check water levels every month or so. If you are not going to be driving it at all, disconnect either the main Positive or the main Negative cable to eliminate any parasitic load, but leave the smaller (8 or 10 Ga) wires from the charger receptacle connected. |
