Default Electric Yamaha G29

Good day all. I am working on a 2008 G29 Yamaha electric golf cart. I just had the motor refurbished with new bearings and brushes. I was told that the pick-up unit or speed sensor does not function. The motor runs and works. My question is. Can I run the cart with the pick-up unit disconnected or will it do damage to the motor or controller if operated like this.

The speed sensor is to operate the regen feature of the cart. The motor can be damaged if you are going full tilt downhill and the motor ends up spinning higher than max speed as gravity will make the cart travel higher than its max speed. Otherwise there is no problem with running it this way. It just won't slow down much on its own on flat ground

The only thing I notice though is that when you push the accelerator, it sometimes get gets a surge of power like fast forward erratic speed or shuttering. Could this be that the controller is not able to read the motor RPM

It is possible although there are other factors. I will let @cgtech or others chime in on this because I haven't done much with the G29E.

Speed sensor unplugged does several weird quirks. That is one. I can usually tell if speed sensor is unplugged or not working in less than a hundred feet of driving. It just "feels weird" to me, knowing how it's supposed to work.

Thank you for the response. Can it hurt the motor driving like that?

Just by way of over speed as stated above.
