Yamaha G29 ignition switch keeps failing
I purchased a 2011 Yamaha G29 48V electric cart this spring. I am a novice and have added lights, turn signals, brake lights, horn, battery meter, etc. I also added a voltage reducer. Several months after I made these modification my keyed ignition switch went out. I found and purchased a new switch on line and installed the new switch. Everything was fine for a month and now the new switch is failing. Any ideas open what is knocking the switch out?

Re: Yamaha G29 ignition switch keeps failing
Too much current through the switch from your accessories. Do they only work with the key on? If so, time to wire in a relay and dedicated power feed for them.

Yes, I wired so they will only work with the switch on. And you're mention of a relay and dedicated power just jumped over my pay grade. Looks like I need to start studying stuff again.

Re: Yamaha G29 ignition switch keeps failing
Well the key switch is an input to the computer, only tells it to turn the cart on or off, not carry a lot of power. A relay is a device that uses a little power to control another switch which can hold more current. So the key switch will still control everything, but not have to carry all that power.

Re: Yamaha G29 ignition switch keeps failing
Great info. I appreciate it. But still mixed with a little Greek. But part of the fun of fixing this thing up is the learning, right?

Yes that's right lol. Can you read a wiring diagram? This pic will kind of give you an idea how the relay works/is installed.

You are most gracious sir. At minimum, this will assist in helping me figure it out. It is all about the journey, not the destination!

Re: Yamaha G29 ignition switch keeps failing
Do they make a "heavy duty" switch that can handle more current? Or is the relay my only option?

Re: Yamaha G29 ignition switch keeps failing
Sure, there technically are heavier duty switches (not from Yamaha), but you are still running the main power through the stock tiny yamaha signal wires.
