Make own cables?
I'd like to upgrade the cables on both of my carts, which of course can be expensive. Years ago I used to assemble cables by simply laying a screwdriver across the terminal and whacking it with a hammer to crimp, but I suspect there's a better way to do that for this application.
What do you guys recommend? |

Re: Make own cables?
You can also get Napa Auto Parts to cut the wire to length and provide the copper ends (I have to make these up for my trailers all the time). I crimp the ones I build with a Vice Grip.

Re: Make own cables?
Years ago I was making lots of battery cables and bought a hydraulic crimper from harbor freight, for about $50. Its a one time investment but I have made tons of good cables and never had an issue with bad crimps thus far. It sucks to spend $50 on tool but I think the results will be better than the hammer method.

Re: Make own cables?
I agree, I bought a similar hydraulic one a while back and it works well.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XR8BY65/The only thing You need to be careful is what die to use as they are typically "conversions" from metric sizes and not always labeled accurately. You should try to get a crimp like the one on the 4ga cable below with no "wings" otherwise You will crush a lot of strands and weaken the lug (that picture was using the same 1/0 die on all three cable gauges). |

Re: Make own cables?
I liked the ideal of making my own. I just put lug in vice, melted solder to fill almost full about 3/4 put pre stripped cable in an held a few seconds. No flux just electrical solder. Heat shrink and done. Made to length needed no extra cable. They are solid and flexible no stiffness past the lug. This was in 2012 no problem so far.
