convert 5 lug to 4 lug?
I have a 2005 (I think) EZGO TXT that is a bit of an oddball. It is a factory 6-seat 48v series cart, with 5-lug hubs. It has hydraulic (not the normal mechanical) rear drum brakes.
I need new tires, and would prefer to increase the diameter a bit, but the aftermarket seems to only support the much more common 4-lug/4 inch wheels and tires. It seems that a straightforward solution would be to change the brake drums and front hub to the 4-lug style. Will they fit? Are the splines on the rear axle different on this cart? The cart almost never sees a full load, and is converted to lithium batteries so about 400# lighter than the original 8X6v lead-acid configuration. |

seems to me your cart being a 5-lug drums/wheels actually gives you more options.....as you can get any automotive wheels you want....you just need to measure and determine the lug spacing.

All you should need to do is fit higher profile tyres to your existing rims. or as Sir Nuke said, measure the PCD of the lugs and buy wheels to suit.

The local ezgo dealer quoted me $860 to mount slightly higher profile tires on my existing cheap steel rims. I can buy new brake drums /rear hubs for about $40/side and front hubs for about $60 for regular TXT with the 4x4" lug pattern. If they fit, I can buy cosmetically nicer wheel and tire combos anywhere from about $250 to $600 for a set of 4. There are literally hundreds of affordable options designed for golf cars with the 4x4 lug pattern. Soo... Does anyone know if the parts will fit? They are cheap enough it might be worth ordering some just to see. |

Re: convert 5 lug to 4 lug?
I'm not sure you want to exchange hydraulic rear brakes for the mechanical version. You would need to confirm that new brake cables fit cart and connection to pedal and ability to adjust for those brakes. Why not inquire about the brake drums on the EZGO 2Five. They were equipped with hydraulic brakes and electric parking brake. The front and rear brake hubs may be an easy swap. Then you would have access to all of the golf cart wheels and tires available.
You might even be able to connect the front brake hydraulic hubs to the master cylinder and have 4 wheel disc brakes, big plus all the way around. Hopefully UsgiCollector will chime in here and confirm whether this can be done. He is an EZGO guru. |

My question is if the splines and diameter (and depth) of the brake drum are the same—the brake shoes can be activated hydraulically or mechanically but that makes no difference to the drum and how it works. If a standard brake shoe/hub will fit on the axle spline and the shoes are the same diameter as a standard txt, then it’s a super easy quick swap and I can pick from any of the zillions of wheel/tire combos available. I have an old 36volt TXT here in town, and the parts -look- the same, but the other cart is currently 500 miles away at a vacation home so I can’t just try the parts on for size. |

Re: convert 5 lug to 4 lug?
The ezgo 4 lug drums absolutely will NOT fit on your rear axle. You might have better luck on the front. I'm leaning towards the adapters, as much as I dont like them.
