Default Western Charger

Newbie. Have 2002 Western/Ezgo with 42V, street legal, lights, signals, belts, etc.
Has a Western 42V/14 amp accusense charger/maintainer.

Read many threads on this site regarding chargers. The question...what does maintainer mean. Is this charger something I can leave plugged for extended periods, or just treat like a normal charger...done & unplug?

Hi Bill, first, as far as golf cart chargers go, all of them can be left plugged in. once they are done charging they shut off.

to answer you question about "MAINTAINER", it means that after it completes its regular charge cycle, and with the cart still plugged in......at a predetermined voltage, it will start a "trickle" charge to maintain the battery pack at 100%

oh and btw.....Welcome to our happy little corner of the net, and to BGW. There is a BIG fridge on the back porch with anything you can think of in it...help yourself...of course only take what you can LEGALLY have. Make yourself at home on one of the big fluffy couches, kick your shoes off, put your feet up on one of the tables, yes we are allowed to do that, mom's, wive's, husbands, girlfirends and boyfriends here don't care....and take it easy.

oh...btw....every once in a while a food fight breaks out...so you may not want to wear nice clothes here.

Welcome!!

Thanks, Sir Nuke. Can leave plugged in even if gone a few weeks? Second home.

if the charger you speak of is in fact made as a maintainer after the initial charge, then yes. and when you return, the cart should be fully charged and ready to go when you get there.

The older DPI Accusense charger/maintainers had a timer that initiated a new charge cycle every 28 days after the original charge cycle completed.

The newer ones go into a float charge mode after the regular charge cycle completes.

Both are designed to be left plugged into cart at all times, except when cart is actually being driven.

Give DPI a call, your charger might be able to be retrofitted with a float charge type control board.

One more question. Garage is pretty airtight..no vents. Also hot water is in garage. What about gases generated?

Gas or electric water heater?

Not a problem with an Electric type.
Most, but not all, gas types have open flames.

Batteries out-gas Hydrogen while charging, which is highly flammable and can be explosive at the right concentrations.

If it is an attached garage, the airtight seal is between the house and the garage rather than the garage and outdoors, and garage doors tend to be less than airtight, so there is likely to be a measurable air exchange rate between garage air and outside air.

Also, if the air volume and air exchange rate of the garage is sufficient, the hydrogen gas won't reach flammable concentrations.

If you store gasoline for your lawnmower in the garage and have had a fire yet, it is probably safe to charge the cart in the same garage.

Thanks JB. Since the place is new to us, I checked some more and found a small ceiling access...similar to an attic. Looking up there I saw a vent. Now I will leave the cover askew and that should work. BTW...gas heater.
