1997 Ezgo speed controller smoked after replacing batteries

I have a 1997 Ezgo that I bought not working. Replaced batteries with new US battery 2200. I put the cart on blocks and switched to cart into reverse. The cart beeped, solenoid clicked and cart took off. Speed controller began to smoke and then cart stopped. Figured out micro switch was broke so that is why it just took off on me when switched into reverse. I have since fixed micro switch and solenoid now clicks only when pedal is pushed. But now cart does not work when pedal is depressed. I'm guessing speed controller is now bad but my question is why did the controller start smoking like that? Thanks

Little roller was broken off micro switch causing switch to not be pressed with pedal at rest

Is there a toggle switch on the controller cover?

No run/tow maintenance switch on cover. The speed controller cover(black) was already melted looking when I bought cart if that helps. Batteries that were in the cart were mix and matched brands and were all shot as well.
